Well those of you that know me, know that I’m a pretty big fan of the Dave Matthews Band. Well a few weeks ago I ordered the box set of their latest album, The Gorge. I was hoping that it would arrive before I left for Perth, but it didn’t… sniff. But no worries b/c it was waiting for me when I returned. So what makes the box set different? Easy, it’s six CDs instead of two. While the regular version (two CD version) is a best of for a three night concert, the six CD version is all three nights. I’ve listened to the first couple concerts and so far… I like! It’s easily up there for one of their better live albums.
While the live albums are definately better than some of their studio ones I am getting a little concerned b/c apparently they’re planning to start a live series, which is exclusive to the DMB site. The first one is to be released on November 2nd. My concern lies in the fact that the DMB hasn’t released a studio album in a while. Yes, I realise that Dave and Boyd have released solo albums, but to have four live CDs (and counting) in between studio albums seems to be pushing it slightly. Heck the songs on the last studio album, Busted Stuff, was just an official release of the Lillywhite Sessions (an album that was scrapped before the making of Everyday). I guess I’m just the type of guy that likes to see bands evolve and add more songs to their collection. Don’t get me wrong, I love the collection they have now and their new song Loving Wings (first released on The Gorge) is an instant favourite in my books, but it’s only one of a few new songs on the album.
In other music related stuff, they’ve been playing the new U2 song on the radio a lot and… it has to grow on me. Hopefully the next couple singles are better.
