Well I just spent the last three days cruising around the Whitsunday Islands on a traditional wooden sailboat. It was heaps of fun b/c I’ve never lived on a boat before, let alone a sailboat! The only bad part was the there was little to no wind, so we were using the motor most of the time to get around. We managed to do heaps of snorkelling and even visit the famed Whitehaven Beach which has some super fine white sand. Since it’s stinger season this time of year, whenever we went in the water we had to where the always attractive stinger-suits. Which is pretty much a light-weight wetsuit, but it was worth it b/c we did see one jellyfish, dont know if was deadly, but we avoided it.
Before coming down the Airlie Beach (which was the home base for the sailing), I was up on Magnetic Island, which is just of the coast of Townsville. I had a full day there and wouldn’t you know it, it rained! Well I got a hike in in the morning before it started pouring. But that evening I met some cool people and shot some pool and drank with them as I we waited out the rain. Wouldn’t you know it, that the day I left it was a gorgeous sunny day! There isn’t too much to do on the island excpet a couple short hikes and learn how to dive, but saying that, it’s still really nice.
small world case #112: When I was in Townsville I started talking to some random Canadians (I had to talk to them b/c they were playing cards with Toronto Maple Leaf playing cards). Anyways, turns out that one of them was the housemate of track teammate from Queen’s. I’ve probably more then likely to met him before, who knows.
